NOLA Snoball Finder

Promotional app

Overview

For Peter Mayer’s 50th anniversary, my team and I pitched a promotional app to advertise the event and bring a little bit of summer cheer to the city. We landed on creating an app that helps users find snoball locations across New Orleans called the Nola Snoball Finder.

Research

My team and I started by contacting employees, families, and friends of Peter Mayer. We interviewed individuals about their summer snoball routines and landed on a few personas to guide us in our wireframe stage.

Personas

Young at Heart

The second user group is made of adults without children who are strongly part of the New Orleans culture. These folks might live in different neighborhoods than the snoball stands they frequent, and they are more adventurous than the families with kids.

These users may or may not have a favorite stand, but they are also willing and able to go further to try new things. They are most likely to try new stands that appear each year or try out new offerings; they look for location and menu updates

Age: 20-99

  • More adventurous

  • Middle class to wealthy

  • Varying levels of tech capabilities

  • Likely to participate in local events, festivals

Flavorful Families

One user group would be families with young children, most likely out for school. Living in more residential neighborhoods, they have a snoball stand or location close by in short driving or even walking distance.

These families often go for snoballs at least once a week during the season, and they typically have specific flavors they go back to over and over again.

Parents: 26-36 years old

Children: 2-12 years old

  • Live and shop locally

  • Middle class

  • Tech savvy

  • More freedom during the summer

Wireframes

After developing personas, we made a list of features needed for an MVP. These features would drive the wireframes and eventual design of the project. Working closely with my developer, we created wireframes that represented the functionality we were able to create together and the features needed for the app to support our users and be successful.

MVP Features

  • Map view

  • List view

  • Search + filters

  • Stand information card

  • List of flavors per stand + other offerings

  • Hours

  • Dietary information (e.g. sugar free)

  • Favorites list

Art Direction

For the look and feel of the app, I created a UI based on pixel art of the 90s and early 2000s that would appeal to kids and their parents’ own childhood nostalgia.

While I created the UI of the app, I worked with a local production company Flatlands to produce the intro graphic that users see opening the app for the first time.
